From Drips to Disasters: Preventing Water Damage

Preventing and Preparing for Water Damage

Water damage is the top cause of property loss in commercial buildings, according to research by Zurich North America. The top five sources of commercial water damage are roofs, toilets, sprinkler systems, water heaters, and HVAC systems.

Water damage can be devastating, but with the right preparation, you can reduce its impact on your business.

Here are steps you can take right now to prepare for and prevent water damage:
  • Schedule regular property inspections. Look for indications of water damage, such as leaks, discoloration, or moisture buildup. Ensure that gutters and downspouts are free from debris.
  • Invest in landscaping solutions that facilitate drainage away from your building’s foundation.
  • Routinely inspect water-using appliances and replace aging hoses with durable alternatives.
  • Install a sump pump in your basement or lower levels. If you already have a sump pump, regularly test its functionality.
  • Document your assets through photographs or videos. Safeguard these files off-site or in the cloud.
  • Develop an emergency response plan with your staff. Ensure everyone knows how to shut off utilities. Designate safety zones for a water-related emergency.

Being prepared and taking immediate action can make all the difference in minimizing the impact of water damage. To learn more about how ATI addresses water damage, read our latest case study.
