Biohazard waste may consist of regulated medical waste, waste from biohazard incidents, trauma scene waste, materials from managing human remains, animal waste, contaminated food supplies, or samples of microorganisms or toxins from biological sources that could affect human health or the environment.
Notify others of the hazard immediately. Gather spill supplies, line a bucket with a biohazard bag, and have a sharps container ready. Put on two layers of gloves and splash goggles. Prepare the disinfectant. If sharps or broken glass are present, use tongs or forceps to collect them, then cover the spill with absorbent materials. Remove these materials with a dustpan and broom, disposing of everything in the biohazard bag. Apply disinfectant, allowing appropriate contact time, and clean up with paper towels. Use Sani-Cloth wipes if applicable and let surfaces air dry. Repeat disinfection if necessary. Dispose of outer gloves and goggles in the biohazard bag, then remove inner gloves. Seal the bag, label it, and arrange for proper disposal. Wash hands thoroughly and restock the spill kit.
