Grow Past the Hustle

ATI Restoration

If you’re receiving this email, you’re either a business owner or an executive at a company, which is how I know that you understand what it looks like to put your head down, work incredibly hard, and grind things out to get where you want to go. You’ve put in the 16-hour days, you’ve missed events, delayed vacations, and, ultimately, have achieved success in your line of work.

This is not bad, but what I’ve come to understand is that this should come in seasons

As a business owner or executive of a company, there’s an obligation, a calling, to grow beyond this breakneck pace of life and enter into a period of growth that is sustainable for you (mentally, physically, spiritually) and for your company. When you’re running at a fast pace, it becomes much too easy to get on cruise control, grind things out, and never stop.

Everything around us will say that this hustle, this pace of life, these sacrifices are simply what is necessary to be successful at whatever we’re doing.

Paradoxically, life shows us in various ways—failing health, broken relationships, depression—that we aren’t meant to maintain this pace for the rest of our lives.

It oftentimes takes someone from the outside to “crack” our minds open and show us what is possible. To show us there’s a different way of living, a new way of doing things.

Seeing what others are accomplishing can propel us into a new level of growth, causing us to reassess our business practices, mental practices, etc., and see how we can enter this new phase of business, of life, in a way that reflects this growth.

Whether you’ve dug in your heels and haven’t updated your software or operating systems for a decade but are opening your mind to how AI can help your business, or are finally willing to take the leap of faith and hire that executive your company so desperately needs, but costs a pretty penny—these decisions are oftentimes made by watching what someone has done before you, and believing you can do the same.

Bringing this back to restoration, we’re getting better at having these conversations with one another. However, data is king and is something our industry, quite frankly, really lacks.

Having data that tells us whether our 30–35% labor overhead is in line with industry standards and where our margins may be slipping opens our minds to see what’s possible and what our business can grow into. Better yet, restorers can contribute to this data and help others experience this same growth and freedom in other areas of their business.

Now, here’s my ask: You’ve probably heard me talk about the Cost of Doing Business Survey with the RIA and KnowHow. It is my wholehearted belief that the results of this survey benefit our industry in such a positive way and that participating is a way to help other restorers improve their businesses and experience that same freedom.
