THE CHALLENGE
In March 2023, a severe winter storm caused the Pajaro River levee to fail, flooding Monterey County, CA, with a surge of water and mud. This unfortunate event led to the evacuation of 1,700 residents and significant damage to vital County properties, including the historic Porter-Vallejo Mansion and essential community facilities. ATI’s immediate focus was to navigate the complex disaster response and recovery efforts within a tight 30-day timeline, covering over 67,000 sq. ft. This involved addressing challenges like contaminated crawlspaces and the careful restoration of a historic building.
THE OUTCOME
Thanks to ATI's strategic approach to disaster response, the county was able to recover quickly, restoring a sense of normalcy for the community. The project was completed successfully while adhering to budget and safety standards, showcasing our expertise in navigating complex and high-stakes situations. Preserving the Porter-Vallejo Mansion and other important properties highlighted our commitment to both technical excellence and compassionate service. This resulted in high client satisfaction and reinforced ATI’s reputation as a leader in innovative restoration practices.

The Situation

The levee breach brought about a serious flood that greatly affected the Pajaro community, prompting urgent actions to minimize damage and restore normalcy. The widespread impact on the county required a coordinated response to manage water damage, handle hazardous materials, and prioritize the preservation of cultural heritage. This situation called for innovative and thoughtful strategies from ATI, as we worked to tackle environmental hazards, conduct structural assessments, and implement protective measures for the community.

The Solution

We put together a comprehensive plan to address the various challenges stemming from the levee breach. By using effective project management techniques, we coordinated multiple teams to work simultaneously, ensuring a quicker timeline while focusing on moisture control in both residential and office spaces. In the Porter-Vallejo Mansion, our specialized procedures for lead abatement involved eco-friendly solvents to safely remove hazardous paint. We also employed innovative sequencing to facilitate efficient excavation in tight spaces. These efforts not only prevented further damage, but also maintained the integrity of crucial community structures.
